Mike Petke: The Rapids Need New Managment
Oct 27th, 2010 by pitchpass

I figured I'd stay with the sensationalized headline since it worked out well last time.
One of the most colorful characters in MLS history is Mike Petke. Petke is one of those players who you love when he's on your team and hate when he isn't. From his celebrated hair to his uncompromising style of play, Petke has endeared himself to most MLS supporters during his 14 years in the league. What I've always loved about him is that he is as real as it gets. He's never shied away from giving his honest opinion and that was a big reason why I wanted to get him on the show one last time before he hangs up his boots at the end of the season. He didn't disappoint either with strong views on the Colorado franchise, his passion for NYRB, what might have been if he had rested injuries more or went on a German adventure, and, most poignantly, the physical struggles an athlete endures later in his career and the toll it takes on his personal life.
In a year when some of the greats of the league are retiring, I hope the legacy that Petke leaves won't be lost in the shuffle.
